Daw Pegwn ag artistiaid at ei gilydd i ddychmygu ffyrdd amgen o feddwl am ddyfodolau ieithoedd Cymru \ Pegwn brings artists together to imagine ways of thinking differently about language futures in Wales.
Pegwn 2025: anastomosis
Ar gyfer y cam yma o ffrwd Pegwn, rydyn ni wedi gwahodd Casi Wyn i guradu rhaglen breswyl pedwar diwrnod i wyth artist neu ymarferydd creadigol, o unrhyw ddisgyblaeth.
Cynnhelir y preswyliad dros gyfnod o bedwar diwrnod ym mis Gorffennaf, 2025 - yng nghartref Peak; y Mynyddoedd Duon.
Byddwn ni’n archwilio iaith a chysylltiad drwy sgyrsiau, teithiau cerdded lleol a gweithdai arbennig dan arweiniad ein cyfranwyr gwadd. Yn ogystal â thâl cydnabyddiaeth - bydd gofod braf i artistiaid gael aros yn Llangenau ym Mharc Cenedlaethol Bannau Brycheiniog.

Mae’r term anastomosis / anastomosau yn un cyffredinol, sy’n disgrifio system o lwybrau – yn afonydd, pibellau gwaed neu system ogofâu – sy’n gwahanu ac ail-gysylltu dro ar ôl tro.
Mewn termau daearyddol, gall afonydd hollti ac ail-gysylltu nifer o weithiau gan greu afonblethog.
Ar lafar, y ferf a ddefnyddir yw cysylltu.
Gall anastomosis hefyd gyfeirio at ogofâu sy’n ffurfio’n araf drwy ddyfalbarhad dŵr dros milliynau o flynyddoedd gan greu lle rhyngddynt, a phlethu systemau cymhleth a chydgysylltiedig - weithiau’n weladwy, weithiau’n gudd. Weithiau, gyda lwc, cawn ddarganfod patrwm fel yr un uchod, yng nghanol ein llwybr ar daith gerdded diweddar o dan creigiau Ogof y Daren Cilau.
Gan ddefnyddio anastomosau Llangatwg fel ffordd o weithio, bydd y rhaglen hon yn ymchwilio’r Gymraeg gyfochr ag ymarferion amlieithog; i’n gwreiddio yn ogystal a'n herio i ail ddychmygu ein synnwyr o hunaniaeth.
Artistiaid Pegwn 2025
Penny Hallas
Yn wreiddiol o Swydd Efrog (g. 1960, Leeds) daeth Penny Hallas i Gymru gyntaf i astudio Celf Weledol a Hanes Celf yn Aberystwyth, cwrs fu’n gyfrifol am osod y sylfeini i'w diddordeb mewn fframweithiau cymdeithasol-ddiwylliannol - y cyd-berthnasoedd, y prosesau a'r effeithiau rhwng systemau cydgysylltiedig fel yr amgylchedd, natur, diwydiant, twristiaeth, amaethyddiaeth, seicoleg a chelf.
Fel artist amlgyfrwng mae hi'n aml yn gweithio ar y cyd â beirdd, perfformwyr a chymunedau. Mae ei phrosiectau a’i phreswylfeydd diweddar yn cyfuno naratifau amrywiol o gefn gwlad ac yn adlewyrchu'r llu o alwadau ar amgylcheddau bregus. Mae hi wedi arddangos yn eang yng Nghymru a thu hwnt – Iwerddon, Brwsel, Berlin, Barcelona, Lloegr, UDA, y Ffindir, Canada.
Larysa Martseva
“Treuliais fy mhlentyndod yn Siberia a Mongolia, a’m hieuenctid mewn dinas ar y ffin lle’r oedd traddodiadau Wcrain, Gwlad Pwyl, Awstria a Hwngari yn dawnsio gyda’i gilydd ar bob cornel. Gweithiais yn Budapest a Washington — blynyddoedd a ddyfnhaodd fy nghysylltiad â Hwngari ac a agorodd ffenestr i fywyd Americanaidd yn ddiweddarach. Yna, yn gwbl annisgwyl, camais i fyd newyddiaduraeth sgleiniog. Ar ôl blynyddoedd mewn prosiectau llawr gwlad gyda Greenpeace ac USAID, cefais fy hun yn ysgrifennu am premieres crand pobl eraill. Yna daeth teledu — sgriptiau, cyfresi, cynhyrchu. Ac yna: newidiwyd popeth gan y rhyfel. Mewn dim ond 15 munud, roedd yn rhaid i mi adael y cyfan. Gabin Kongolo
Mae Gabin Kongolo yn fardd ac yn gwneuthurwr ffilmiau, ac mae ei waith yn archwilio hunaniaeth, cof, iaith a thrawsnewidiad drwy lens sinematig. Mae Gabin yn creu “cerddi sinema”—gweithiau hybrid sy’n cyfuno barddoniaeth, tystiolaeth, ac adrodd straeon gweledol—mae ei ffilmiau wedi cael eu harddangos yn Oriel Saatchi ac wedi eu cefnogi gan gronfa Blue Creator Fund Clwb Pêl-droed Chelsea, gan gynnwys cerdd gomisiwn ar gyfer eu hymgyrch Mis Balchder 2025. Mae ei brosiect parhaus, Innocence, yn dal y foment y mae pobl yn colli eu synnwyr o burdeb—drwy gariad, trais, neu ddadrithiad—wedi'i hadrodd drwy dystiolaethau bywyd go iawn a delweddaeth farddonol. Aur Bleddyn
Mae Aur (Hi/Nhw) yn fyfyriwr Curadu Cyfoes ym Manceinion yn dilyn astudio’r Gymraeg ac Athroniaeth yng Nghaerdydd. Cafodd eu magu yng nghanolbarth Cymru ac mae eu gwaith yn canolbwyntio ar ymarferion rhyngddisgyblaethol sy’n clymu hunaniaeth a lle drwy gof diwylliannol.
Mae nhw wedi gweithio’n flaenorol fel curadur a hwylusydd llawrydd gyda Cardiff MADE, Canolfan y Celfyddydau Aberystwyth ac Artes Mundi.
Yn ddiweddar bu Aur yn gymrawd Cyngor Prydeinig yn y Venice Biennale gan ddatblygu prosiect cyfunol o amgylch arferion byw lleol i’r ynys.
Darya Williams
Mae Darya Saoirse Williams yn ddylunydd gofodol ac yn fyfyriwr MA Pensaernïaeth yng Ngholeg Brenhinol y Celfyddydau. Yn wreiddiol o Aberdâr a bellach yn gweithio yn Llundain, mae ei gwaith cyfredol yn archwilio sut y gall cof diwylliannol, iaith a thirwedd lunio ymyrraeth bensaernïol. Wedi'i leoli yn Ffos-y-Frân, Merthyr Tudful, mae ei phrosiect yn cynnig dull amgen o adfer tir ôl-ddiwydiannol drwy ddulliau dylunio defodol, gorymdeithiol, a dwyieithog. Wedi’i hysbrydoli gan ei threftadaeth Gymreig-Iranaidd a'i chefndir pensaernïol, mae hi'n datblygu strategaethau cyfranogol, sy’n seiliedig ar le, sy'n herio etifeddiaethau echdynnol ac sy’n ymgysylltu â chof, gwrthsafiad a ffyrdd o fesur y tir.
Eddie Ladd
Mae Eddie wedi bod yn berfformiwr theatr gorfforol ers oes pys.
At hyn, mae’n gyfarwyddwr symud ac yn arweinydd cynyrchiadau bro. Cyfuna goreograffi, sgript a thechnoleg o bob math yn ei darnau, a gyflwynir mewn theatrau, ar y we, ac ar safleoedd arbennig. Mae’r themâu yn olrhain ei milltir sgwâr a’i le yn y byd. Cafodd y cynyrchiadau hyn eu dangos ledled y byd ac mae ei gwaith diweddar wedi ei ddyfeisio a’i berfformio yn y beudy ar y fferm lle mae’n byw.

“Dwi’n artist o Ddyffryn Nantlle sy’n gweithio o fewn ffilm, cerddoriaeth a pherfformio. Dwi’n gweithio ar draws cyfryngau ond efo diddordeb mawr yn y gofod sy’n cael ei greu drwy gyfuno delweddau, sain a gwaith byw. Dwi newydd orffen blwyddyn fel un o artistiaid preswyl natur am byth yn gweithio gyda rhywogaethau prin yng ngogledd orllewin Cymru. Owain Train McGilvary
Artist o Ynys Môn yw Owain Train McGilvary. Fel arfer mae'n gweithio gyda gwaith fideo, lluniadu, collage a phaentiadau gwahanol artistiaid. Mae ei brosiectau'n rhoi sylw arbennig o fanwl i gydweithrediadau trawsddisgyblaethol ac ailgyflunio archifau presennol. Yn flaenorol mae wedi gweithio gyda reslwyr, artistiaid drag, cerddorion, awduron ac artistiaid gweledol eraill i greu gweithiau amlgyfrwng, amlieithog ac aml-ddychymygus. Wedi'i ysgogi gan weithgarwch a hanesion gwrth-ddiwylliannol, mae'r artist yn ymroi i’w brosiectau gyda phobl dros gyfnodau hir o amser drwy feithrin perthynas llawn ymddiriedaeth a fydd yn parhau, gobeithio, y tu hwnt i waddol y gwaith.
Cyfrannwyr Rhaglen Pegwn 2025
Mae Dr Becca Voelcker yn awdur ac yn hanesydd celf, ffilm, a diwylliant gweledol. Mae llawer o'i gwaith yn ystyried tir a’n ‘synnwyr o le’. Mae hi’n ddarlithydd yn Goldsmiths, Prifysgol Llundain ac enillodd ei PhD ym Mhrifysgol Harvard yn 2021.
Fe’i henwyd yn BBC New Generation Thinker ac mae hi'n cyfrannu'n rheolaidd i BBC Radio 3, 4 a Cymru. Mae ei llyfr cyntaf, Land Cinema in an Age of Extraction (2025) yn edrych ar hanes traws-ddiwylliannol sinema eco-wleidyddol dros ddeg lleoliad gan gynnwys Cymru, lle magwyd Becca, a Japan, lle bu’n byw fel oedolyn ifanc.

Pegwn yw rhaglen Gymraeg ac amlieithog Peak. Yn cynnwys sgyrsiau, cyhoeddiadau, gweithdai a phreswylfeydd, mae’n blatfform ar gyfer artistiaid ac awduron i archwilio themâu iaith, cyfieithu, a chreu geirfa. Dechreuodd y rhaglen yn 2021 mewn cydweithrediad â’r awdur Dylan Huw a chyhoeddwyd ymagor #1 yn ddiweddar, sef casgliad o waith ysgrifennu o breswylfeydd Pegwn yn 2023.

Pegwn 2025: anastomosis
For this iteration of Pegwn - we’ve invited singer and poet Casi Wyn to guest curate a residential programme for eight artists or creative practitioners, from any discipline.
The programme takes place on Peak’s doorstep in the Black Mountains across four days in July, 2025. In the form of conversations, walks and tailored workshops hosted by guest contributors - we will be focusing on themes of connection, inspired by language.
Alongside an honorarium fee, the programme offers an inspirational space for artists to stay in Llangennau in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.
About the programme theme:
At Mynydd Llangatwg, a limestone escarpment rising above the Usk Valley near Crug Hywel, anastomoses are recorded on the surfaces of some rocks.
The term anastomosis or anastomoses is in some ways a general one, descriptive of a system of channels – be they rivers, blood vessels or cave passages – that repeatedly split and connect.
In the physical geography of rivers, anastomoses can refer to its splitting channels that can happen repeatedly, becoming braided rivers. Yn Gymraeg: Afonblethog. To anastomose, in its verb form, is cysylltu – to connect.
In geologic terms, anastomosis refers to the formation of caves through the persistence of water across millions of years, often hidden from view. But sometimes we are fortunate enough to encounter an intricate pattern, like the one above, finding its place in our path on a recent walk - just under the cliffs of Ogof y Daren Cilau.
Using the ancient anastomoses of Mynydd Llangatwg to inform a way of working, this programme will hold a multi-lingual space, led primarily in Welsh. We will use language as a tool for rooting into place – whilst uprooting the imagination.

Penny Hallas
Originally from Yorkshire (b. 1960, Leeds) Penny Hallas first came to Wales to study Visual Art and Art History in Aberystwyth, a course that laid the foundations of her interest in sociocultural frameworks - the relationships, processes and impacts between interconnecting systems such as environment, nature, industry, tourism, agriculture, psychology and art.
A multi-media artist, she often works collaboratively with poets, performers and communities. Recent projects and residencies combine diverse narratives of countryside and reflect the multiplicity of demands on fragile environments. She has exhibited widely in Wales and beyond – Ireland, Brussels, Berlin, Barcelona, England, USA, Finland, Canada.
Larysa Martseva
“I spent my childhood in Siberia and Mongolia, and my youth in a borderland city where Ukrainian, Polish, Austrian and Hungarian traditions danced together on every corner. I worked in Budapest and Washington — years that deepened my connection to Hungary and later opened a window into American life. Then, quite unexpectedly, I stepped into the world of glossy journalism. After years in grassroots projects with Greenpeace and USAID, I found myself writing about other people’s champagne premieres. Next came television — scripts, series, production. And then: the war changed everything. In just 15 minutes, I had to leave it all behind. Wales became my new beginning — and, unexpectedly, the place where I found my voice.”
Gabin Kongolo
Gabin Kongolo is a poet and filmmaker whose work explores identity, memory, language and transformation through a cinematic lens. Gabin creates “cine-poems”—hybrid works blending poetry, testimony, and visual storytelling—his films have been showcased at the Saatchi Gallery and supported by Chelsea FC’s Blue Creator Fund, including a commissioned poem for their 2025 Pride Month campaign. His ongoing project, Innocence, captures the moment people lose their sense of purity—through love, violence, or disillusionment—told through real-life testimonies and poetic imagery. Alongside his filmmaking, Gabin is a BAFTA Cymru-winning actor, with credits including the double BAFTA-winning Mr Loverman (BBC), Bariau (S4C), and Antony & Cleopatra at Shakespeare’s Globe.
Aur Bleddyn
Aur (She/Them) is a Contemporary Curating student in Manchester after studying Welsh and Philosophy in Cardiff. They grew up in mid Wales and their work focuses on interdisciplinary practices that link identity and place through cultural memory.
They have previously worked as a freelance curator and facilitator with Cardiff MADE, Aberystwyth Arts Centre and Artes Mundi.
Aur has recently been a fellow of the British Council at the Venice Biennale developing a collective project around the island’s local living habits.
Darya Williams
Darya Saoirse Williams is a spatial designer and MA Architecture student at the Royal College of Art. Originally from Aberdare and now based in London, her current work explores how cultural memory, language, and landscape can shape architectural intervention. Situated at Ffos-y-Fran, Merthyr Tydfil, her project proposes an alternative approach to the remediation of post-industrial land through ritual, procession, and bilingual design methods. Drawing from her Welsh-Iranian heritage and architectural background, she develops participatory, place-based strategies that challenge extractive legacies and engage with embedded memory, resistance, and ways of taking a measure of the land.
Eddie Ladd
Eddie is a lifelong physical theatre performer.
In addition, she is a movement director and leader of local productions. She combines choreography, script and technology of all kinds in her work, which is presented in theatres, online, and on specific sites. The themes explore her square mile and its place in the world. These productions were shown all over the world and her recent work has been devised and performed in the cowshed on the farm where she lives.
Hedydd Ioan
"I'm an artist from Dyffryn Nantlle who works in film, music and performance. I work across all media but I’m fascinated by the space that is created by combining images, sound and live work. I've just finished a year as one of the artists in residence on Natur am byth working with rare species in north west Wales. At the end of last year my first album entitled skylrk was released, and through my work in co-managing the inois music label, I explore the power of the arts to be able to give independent artists a voice, platform and space to create unique and alternative work."
Owain Train McGilvary
Owain Train McGilvary is an artist from Ynys Môn. He usually works with artists’ video, drawing, collage and painting. His projects pay particularly close attention to cross-disciplinary collaborations and reconfiguring existing archives. Previously he has worked with wrestlers, drag artists, musicians, writers and other visual artists to create multimedia, multilingual and multi-imaginative works. Driven by counter cultural activity and histories, the artist devotes his projects with people over long periods of time through building trusting relationships that hope to continue beyond the legacy of the work.
Pegwn 2025 Programme Contributors
Dr Becca Voelcker is a writer and historian of art, film, and visual culture. Much of her work considers land and senses of place. She is a Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London and earned her PhD at Harvard University in 2021.
In 2024 Becca was named a BBC New Generation Thinker. She regularly contributes to BBC Radio 3, 4 and Cymru. Her first book, Land Cinema in an Age of Extraction (2025) is a cross-cultural history of eco-political cinema based in ten locations including Wales, where Becca grew up, and Japan, where she lived as a young adult.
“Based on Pegwn's current theme, I am interested in writing that braids strands of thought connecting land, memoir, and politics. Using Welsh and English, and the poetic possibilities of translation, what pathways might open over three days in the landscape of Bannau Brycheiniog?”
Leading Pegwn’s second day as part of this year’s residential is singer, poet and Creative Director of Codi Pais - Casi Wyn. Casi will be looking at poetry and memory as portals for inspiration.
During the day, Casi will be joined by Alan Bowring - officer for the Fforest Fawr Geopark, usually found introducing visitors to the deep time history at the National Park’s west side - but he’ll also seize this opportunity to unpack the east.
In pursuing the links between the ‘-ologies’ and the natural and cultural histories of the Park’s special places, he draws too from his experience of countryside conservation and outdoor recreation to dig beneath the surface of this palimpsest conjured from stone and earth and wood and water.

About Pegwn:
Pegwn is Peak’s Cymraeg and multi-lingual programme. Comprising of talks, publications, workshops and residencies, it’s a platform for artists and writers to explore themes of language, translation, and vocabulary-making. The programme began in 2021 in collaboration with writer Dylan Huw and recently published ymagor #1, a collection of writing from Pegwn residencies in 2023.

Ymagor is a chapbook co-edited with Dylan Huw as part of Pegwn’s 2023-4 programme. Navigating ideas of linguistic overlaps and inbetweenesses, the publication emerged from an open call for a week-long artist residency at Platfform 2, Y Fenni Train Station. Contributions by Toyosi Adenuga, Renée Eshel and Morgan Owen are closely anchored to the site’s character as a place of simultaneous transit and reflection, impermanence and lived history.

The Pegwn residency, undertaken by Toyosi Adenuga, was conceived as a continuation of Pegwn’s previous programmes, which centred collective artistic research across languages and disciplines at Platfform 2. Toyosi deepened long-term research into the visual representation of embodied speech and abstracted language, informed by her personal relationship with Yorùbá and an engagement with Peak’s linguistic specificity and artistic networks. Toyosi’s residency culminated in a roaming workshop around Abergavenny; its structure and prompts have been reconfigured as poetic interventions for Ymagor.
‘perfedd – pêr fedd’ by Morgan Owen is guided by a dialogue between the inbetweenness and constant motion that characterises Platfform 2, and an interrogation of the linguistic and poetic potential of borderlands. Demanding an understanding of Cymraeg defined by malleability and mystery, Morgan speaks to “language borders” of various kinds, informed both by his upbringing speaking Welsh in predominantly English-speaking communities, and his work as a lexicographer, directly responsible for codifying the language.
Mirroring Morgan’s interest in “deranging and de-arranging” established vocabularies, ‘Cymru as’ is a sequence of memory prose-poems by Renée Eshel. Half-remembered anecdotes, folkloric fragments and stock-photo clichés of Wales and Welsh are kaleidoscopically collated, in service of an intimate exploration of plural class, language and national identities. Renée writes a contemporary Wales into being with an imagistic, dryly funny eye on the strangeness of youth, memory and politics.
Ymagor was launched at a special event at Book Space Cardiff, on 27th February 2025, which brought together all the contributors for an evening of readings and conversation.

Following our recent Open Call, we’re excited to announce Toyosi Adenuga has been selected for the 2023 Pegwn Residency
Toyosi Adenuga is an artist and spatial designer whose work interrogates the intricate choreography between our environments, our senses and our perceptions through the realms of embodiment and interconnectedness. Toyosi’s creative practice gestures towards her diasporic identity and the Yorùbá’s particular way of tracing and experiencing the world which considers the body from a multi-sensory perspective. She experiments with various media such as drawing collage, sculpture and video to investigate relationships between the material and the immaterial. Toyosi recently completed an MA in Interior Design from the Royal College of Art and is a graduate of BA Interior Architecture from Oxford Brookes University.
As part of her Pegwn residency at Platfform 2, Toyosi will spend time immersed both in the landscapes surrounding the station and in her ongoing artistic exploration of embodied speech, modes of communication in the face of language loss, and the abstraction of language as a catalyst for transformative interactions. Drawing on personal experiences in trying to learn Yorùbá, and from Pegwn’s previous programmes, she will play with the medium of drawing to represent the interplay between the Yoruba and English languages and interrogate how perceived language hierarchies might be challenged.
Language Reclamation Workshop
Friday 6th October
To draw the residency to a close, and open out the ways of working Toyosi centres in her practice, there will be a public event on Friday 6th October (11am - 4pm, starting from/returning to Abergavenny Train Station). The walk and workshop is open to 8 participants and the group will be invited to share experiences of language reclamation through individual and collective wor(l)d-mapping exercises across collage, drawing and other activities. This event is hosted within the context of Pegwn’s ongoing enquiry into language-making and translation in artist-led and site-responsive ways.

Mae Pegwn wedi blaguro ers hydref 2020. Pegwn has grown since autumn 2020, from an inquiry into how a place-based contemporary arts organisation like Peak might embed an imaginative and fluid approach to the Welsh language into all its programming and structures, into an expansive programme centring Cymraeg’s capacity for questioning inherited knowledges, and the potential that open, multilingual spaces could hold for new ways of thinking and relating.
In 2020-1, Peak hosted a series of virtual dialogues, which were spaces for artists, writers and thinkers to collectively consider these ideas and to exchange references, views and experiences, in a Cymraeg-led space. Gradually, Pegwn has opened up to invite guest speakers, commission new work and inform more of Peak’s curatorial decision-making, including a series of Welsh-language text commissions as part of the Storm Kitchen Talks programme, a playfully Cymraeg-led reading group and artist commission as part of Walking Backwards Into the Future and a translingual publication ululations in response to Alberta Whittle’s Art Night commission hosted by Peak at Abergavenny Train Station.
Ar gyfer rhaglen hydref 2022 Pegwn, treuliodd Llinos Anwyl, Dylan Huw a Talulah Thomas gyfnod yn Stafell Ddarllen Platfform 2, wedi’u hamgylchynu gan ei lyfrgell eang, olion blwyddyn o weithgaredd Casgleb, a synnau a symudiadau gorsaf brysur. Eu tasg oedd i greu rhyw waith casglebol newydd, gan ddefnyddio fel cychwynbwynt cyn raglenni Pegwn a’u profiadau personol o ddefnyddio iaith fel offeryn celfyddydol a gwleidyddol.
Roedd diddordeb gan yr artistiaid archwilio sut mae rheolau cymdeithasol a systemau o (hunan)heddlua a (hunan)surveillance yn cael eu hadlewyrchu yn eu perthynas gyda’r Gymraeg. Sut gall arbrofi’n gasglebol gyda ‘non-synnwyr’ fel ethos — chwarae a dychmygu gan ymwrthod â disgwyliadau o ‘gywirdeb’ a ‘synnwyr cyffredin’ — gynnig rhyw fath o ryddhad?
Daeth y cysyniad o gyfyngiadau yn ganolog i’w proses, fel strwythurau creadigol i’w defnyddio a’u gwthio’n erbyn. Dewisodd yr artistiaid ddeg sbardun thematig a deg cyfyngiad strwythurol/ffurfiol, gan gyfuno nhw ar gyfer deg ymarfer sgwennu awtomatig pum munud o hyd. Beth byddai’r fath gyfyngiadau’n datgelu am ein perthynas gyda natur hylifol iaith, annigonolrwydd iaith? A sut byddai cyfleu’r dull ymchwiliol, safle-benodol hwn o gynhyrchu sgwennu newydd fel ‘gwaith’ i’w rannu?
Synnwyr/nonsynnwyr [Sense/non-sense]
For Pegwn’s autumn 2022 programme, Llinos Anwyl, Dylan Huw and Talulah Thomas spent a few October days in the Platfform 2 Reading Room, surrounded by its library of books and pamphlets, physical traces of a year’s Casgleb activity, and the sounds and movements of the busy train station platform. They were there to see what new work might emerge between them from a starting point of reflecting on previous iterations of Pegwn and sharing personal experiences around the use of language as an artistic and political tool.
They reflected on how societal rules and structures influence relationships to language: from anxieties around being corrected or punished for mis-speaking and the bogeyman of ‘heddlu iaith’ (the language/grammar police), to the ubiquity of AI translation. Could working collaboratively in the name of nonsense-making — play and collective imagining beyond pressures associated with linguistic ‘correctness’ or common sense — suggest something like freedom?
The idea of constraints became a guiding principle in how they approached making work, creative structures to work both with and against. From initial conversations, the three artists chose ten thematic prompts and ten formal constraints, which they then combined for five-minute automatic-writing sessions. What could such constraints reveal about our most intimate relationships to language, its fluidities, its points of collapse? And how to convey this propositional (and site-specific) method of generating new writing together as shareable ‘work’?

Synnwyr/nonsynnwyr [Sense/non-sense] is a trio of videos documenting this process and sharing fragments of the writing it generated. It is composed almost entirely of material produced within the intensive collaborative environment of those days at Platfform . The three chapters, each edited by a different collaborator, take one of the ten thematic prompts as a title.

In spring 2022, as part of Casgleb, we initiated Pegwn’s first physical programme at Abergavenny Train Station’s Platfform 2. Across a series of afternoon-length gatherings, a group of artists and thinkers — read more about them below — spent time playing, experimenting and generating ideas around the tensions and potentialities of living and creating in multilingual contexts.
Spanning geographies from the Wye Valley to Snowdonia to Caerdydd, the group included artists, activists, poets, theatre-makers, musicians and ecologists, and a wide range of languages and lived experiences. This intimately collaborative environment on the train station platform became a space for conversation, sharing of practice, walks, free writing/translation exercises and more.
Exploring the different ways of thinking that can emerge from a fluidly multilingual space - without any expectation that everyone would be on the same page linguistically - this became a time to embrace contradiction, unanswerable questions, mistranslation and half-formed ideas, as the group dug into the knotty, complex pleasures of working and playing with the multiple languages of Wales.
As part of Casgleb’s autumn programme, Dylan Huw, Llinos Anwyl and Talulah Thomas — bilingual writer-artists in their twenties who share an interest in how language intersects with power structures, landscape and queerness — are creating new work together at Platfform 2, expanding upon ideas explored as part of the Pegwn spring programme’s playfully multilingual collective research process.
